In a move of sheer legal brilliance, Patrick Racz, a 8th grade drop out created a LLC called Smartflash which makes no products, has no employees, creates no jobs, has no U.S. presence, and has been set up specifically to exploit the U.S. patent system and has successfully claimed royalties for technology Apple invented. At first Apple refused to pay off this company for the ideas their employees spent years innovating but unfortunately Apple has been left with no choice but to take this fight up through the U.S. Patent court system. Which in the end sided with Smartflash LLC.

First Ubuntu Phone to be distributed soon

A year after it revealed another attempt to muscle in on the smartphone market, Canonical’s first Ubuntu-based smartphone is due to go on sale in Europe in the “coming days”, it said today. The device will be sold for €169.90 (~$190) unlocked to any carrier network, although some regional European carriers will be offering SIM bundles at the point of purchase. The hardware is an existing mid-tier device, the Aquaris E4.5, made by Spain’s BQ — with the Ubuntu version of the device known as the ‘Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition’. So the only difference here is it will be pre-loaded with Ubuntu’s mobile software, rather than Google’s Android platform.

The Pirate Bay Is Back After Nearly Two Months Of "Death"

One of the Internet’s most targeted, and yet also most hard-to-kill sites is back again following a raid on its servers over seven weeks ago: The Pirate Bay resides once again at its familiar “.se” URL, offering a database that appears to be fairly intact, with torrents mostly in place up to its closure on December 9. The website, a famed destination for those seeking pirated material (but which also seeks simply to provide a portal for sharing of information via bit torrent technology, and ascribes content choice to users), went down after its servers were raided at a data center in Nacka station near Stockholm, Sweden. This looked like one of the most serious threats yet to The Pirate Bay, which has been in operation since 2003,

The Mercedes-Benz F 015: this is what tomorrow's self-driving cars look like

Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off a new concept car here at CES this week, and considering the setting, it's appropriately loaded to the gills with technology. The F 015 Luxury in Motion — yes, "Luxury in Motion" is part of the car's name — is basically a sleek pod with a huge passenger compartment, a fortuitous side effect of an imagined future where we spend most of our times chilling out in cars while they drive us around all by themselves. Mercedes actually calls the cabin "lounge-like," thanks to four rotating seats that can face each other. An array of screens throughout the car let passengers interact with controls and entertainment, supporting not-quite-production features like gestures and eye tracking.
